The way to start is the request form on this page. Say what happened, the borough, the building type and whether you can get back in, and your details go to an independent local restoration provider serving New York City, who can contact you.
What to have ready
- What happened: a kitchen or electrical fire, a fire in a neighbor’s unit, smoke or soot only, or water from firefighting.
- The borough and the kind of building: a walk-up, a co-op or condo, a rental, a brownstone, a house, a high-rise or a storefront.
- Whether you can get back in, or whether a vacate order is posted.
- Your insurer’s instructions, if you have them, and the super’s or managing agent’s contact.
What happens next
An independent local restoration provider can contact you by phone or email. The provider may ask for photos when they get in touch. Any inspection, price and work comes from that provider (ask for it in writing), and you decide whether to go ahead. Sending the form is free and you never have to hire anyone.
If you have not done so yet, read what to do after a fire in NYC for the first steps: the all-clear, the utilities, the inventory and the help available if you cannot go home.
